When fall's cooler weather hits, I enjoy curling up in my armchair with some good things to read. When you're in a similar mood, here are some design articles from around the web to complement sips of coffee or hot chocolate:

On treasure hunting

My brother Henry recently sent me this Toronto Star piece in which a traveller raves about the approachable vintage shops of Copenhagen and Stockholm:

Why Copenhagen’s vintage design shops beat modern retail
Discover why a Toronto traveller bypassed high-end boutiques in Copenhagen and Stockholm to find affordable mid-century design souvenirs.

The piece resonated for me, from the writer's ashtray fixation right down to her simply styled shelf at the end. Now, I'll have to plan a Scandinavian pilgrimage!

On designing as a duo

Living solo as I do, there's never a debate over interior design choices. That's probably why I like reading about couples like this one, who take pleasure in creating a harmonious space together:

There's an Epic Danish Furniture Collection in This 1895 Copenhagen House
Kathrine and Christian Poulsen, both partners at House of Finn Juhl, have filled their Copenhagen home with modern chairs, cool art, and ceramics.

The fact that they met and continue to work at The House of Finn Juhl gives the piece an intriguing storybook quality.

On enduring icons

Some design classics disappear for decades, then experience a revival, while others have the good fortune to never leave the spotlight at all. This Dezeen article celebrates eight designs in the latter category, and includes notes on their technical innovations:

Eight mid-century modern designs that never stopped being produced
Jenna McKnight selects eight mid-century modern pieces that have been in production since they were designed in the 1950s and 60s.

On shelter magazines

This New York Times piece piqued my interest because I'm an avid follower of design magazine and was delighted to hear of several titles for the first time:

I've been a big fan of Never Too Small since I discovered it in Montreal's Multimags last summer, and I pick up Apartamento occasionally too, but the rest of this roster I'll have to seek out.

On the fifth wall

Think you're finished with decorating your space? Then give Oh, What a Beautiful Ceiling! a read, an eye-opening Financial Times exploration of how ceilings are becoming canvasses for visual surprises:

The photos in this article are dazzling, so be prepared to reconsider your "fifth wall."

On big changes

Last but not least, if you're looking for a fall home refresh, dive into The Big Change Lookbook, our new 48-page collection of this newsletter's best ideas for expressive interiors, no matter how small your space:

You're helping others make their homes come to life too: a portion of every sale goes to Furniture Bank, a Toronto charity that helps families furnish a home – including kids who don't have a bed of their own.
